A new operating system incompatible with older hardware is surely another MacOS announcement, right? Not this time. Windows users may soon find themselves in the same boat as Apple fans: just after the official announcement of Windows 11 on Thursday, the reveal of much stricter hardware compatibility for the successor to Windows 10.
Unlike previous generations of the operating system, Windows 11 tackles more stringent security requirements, such as the presence of a 2.0 Trusted Platform Module and the ability to use Secure Boot. In a slight surprise, Microsoft has already named specific processors that are licensed for the next era of Windows.
Much remains to be explained, like the criteria for getting the go-ahead, but for now, if you’re curious about whether your chip was successful, you can check it out. To make things easier, we’ve dug out and extracted the most common processors from the list, which you’ll find below.
Is your processor do not called as compatible? Keep in mind that we are still at the start of the Windows 11 reveal. The absence of the list may not be the ultimate limiting factor for installing Windows 11 on your system. We will update with more information here and in our Windows 11 coverage guide as we learn more.

Intel processors compatible with Windows 11
At the moment, Intel processors compatible with Windows 11 are from mid-2017 and not before. Think about 8th generation processors and beyond. Microsoft has the full rundown on their site, which includes the Pentium, Celeron and Xeon chips. To make digitization easier, we’ve narrowed this list down to a handful of common consumer processors from each generation.

AMD processors compatible with Windows 11
Currently, AMD processors approved for Windows 11 date back to 2018. For the most part, that covers 2nd Gen Ryzen (Zen +) processors and beyond. Microsoft has the full list on their site, which includes Athlon and Epyc chips, but for ease of digitization, we’ve narrowed it down to the most common consumer processors of each generation.
We found a few curious omissions in the full rundown. At the time of publication, the 3300X, 4600HS, and 5900H were missing.
Update of 06/29/21: AMD has confirmed that all Ryzen processors support Secure Boot, SVM, and fTPM 2.0. This information does not modify the official Microsoft compatibility list. However, in theory, 1st Generation Ryzen processors would meet Windows 11 criteria, which shows why further clarification of Windows 11 hardware requirements is needed.
