The United States hung on for a 1-0 victory over Haiti in Kansas City in a nervous start in Group B of the 2021 Gold Cup.
With many of America’s top players competing for clubs in Europe, Gregg Berhalter’s MLS side took an early lead when Sam Vines returned home after a ball from Gyasi Zardes found them wide open in the remote station.
It was Vines’ first goal for the United States at the senior international level.

Haiti responded well after conceding and played well for the remainder of the second half as the United States took their lead 1-0 at half-time.
The United States pushed hard to strengthen their lead in the second half, substitute Nicholas Gioacchini looking dangerous and hitting the post with a wide open shot as the game neared 70 minutes.
The next stop for the Americans is a second group stage game against Martinique on July 16.
