Twitter Suspends Account Verification Program Weeks After Mistakenly Approving Fake Profiles

The U.S. microblogging and social networking service Twitter has halted its account verification program, saying it needs to work on the application and review process that allows people to enter the blue tick club .

According to The Verge, this change, where Twitter will not allow new people to request verification, comes after the platform admitted that several fake accounts, which appeared to be part of a botnet, were incorrectly verified.

If you’ve recently requested a verification, you might get it – Twitter Verified has noted that it will always review existing applications, so the freeze simply prevents new people from being able to apply.

In other words, if you could apply before, the Twitter manager says you still can. Twitter has not indicated that it will change the criteria it uses to consider accounts verifiable or not.

A Twitter spokesperson told The Verge it “will resume rolling out the apps in the coming weeks.”

This is not the first time that Twitter has suspended its verification program. He put the public process pending in 2017, after receiving backlash for checking out one of the organizers of the Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville.

It brought back a revamped version in 2021 and paused it a week later Due to an avalanche of requests.

The startup and shutdown issues Twitter has experienced with its Verified program is a testament to the difficulties that can arise when issuing a badge that is sometimes viewed by users as an approval.

Twitter has stated that the purpose of the badge is to show that an account is “genuine, notable and active”, but even these criteria can end up causing controversy when arguably notable people have their applications rejected (especially when fake accounts obviously do through).
