The top 100 mobile games in the US by revenue accounted for 64.4% of all gamer spending in 2020, representing a 4.6% drop in revenue share since 2017, Sensor Tower Store intelligence the data shows.

For this analysis, we looked at data from 2017 to 2020 for the U.S. and global mobile gaming market to examine the distribution of gamer spend among the top 1,000 titles and the growth of each tier over the years. While the revenue share of the top 100 mobile games in the United States has declined over the past four years, player spending in this tier has dramatically increased by over 35% between 2019 and 2020 to reach $ 14.4 billion. dollars, a disproportionate performance triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns.

By analyzing the global market, another story emerges. The top 100 accounted for a 53.5% share of global player spending in 2020, up about 1 percentage point from 2019, but down from 56% in 2017.

Titles ranked 101 to 200 by revenue saw their spend increase 18% year on year in 2020 to $ 10.8 billion, with the revenue share of these games declining 1 percentage point to 13, 6%. However, this is a decrease from a revenue share of 20.4% in 2017.

Rising tide

Our analysis shows that the mobile games market is growing for everyone and not just for the world’s best blockbusters. In the United States last year, all levels outside of the top 100 earning games saw their revenue share grow, while growing faster than the top Y / Y games. Globally, however, the Top 100 titles saw some of the fastest growth in player spending, while being the only level to increase its revenue share. This could, in part, be attributed to some of Asia’s heavyweights like Honor of kings of Tencent, Monster strike of Market, and M line of NCSoft, as well as global successes like Pokémon GO of Niantic, Roblox of Roblox Company and PUBG Mobile from Tencent, all of the gigantic hits far exceed the scale of most other titles on the market.
