The Mets’ end-of-round magic fountain only remained open for half of their double schedule on Wednesday.
After notching a series victory in Game 1 with a spectacular comeback in the extra inning, the Mets couldn’t complete the sweep after falling to the Brewers in the nightcap, 5-0, at Citi Field.
It looked like the Mets (45-38) could have another late rally in the sixth inning, led 3-0, when Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil started with walks against Brad Boxberger. Jonathan Villar then traced a four-length walk to charge the goals, the crowd rising and the green light run coming to plate.
But the round was cut short from there. Francisco Lindor, Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso struck out three straight batters to end the threat.
Luis Urias, who had pushed Jacob deGrom deep to lead in Game 1, then smashed a two-run homerun against Miguel Castro in the start of the seventh to extend the Brewers’ lead to 5-0.
The Mets had used an equalizer home run from Jose Peraza and a two-point single from Jeff McNeil to win Game 1, 4-3, but couldn’t repeat the feat in Game 2. Instead , they were shut out by starter Brett Anderson and the Brewers reliever box.
Robert Stock provided a useful starting point in his Mets debut, allowing two runs in four innings after being called up on Tuesday. The only damage came in the second inning, when he delivered a pounding goal that came back to injury when Manny Piña roped a two-run homer to center-right, giving the Brewers. Piña had entered the 1-for-his-past-40 game.
The Brewers extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning when Willy Adames hit a solo homerun against Drew Smith.
