About the UC GFI scholarship
The UC Global Food Initiative Student Scholarship Program funds student-generated research, related projects or internships focused on food issues. UC’s 10 campuses as well as UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory participate in the program. The scholarship recipient will receive a stipend of $ 3,000, paid half at the start and half at the end of the fellowship. (Applicants should be aware that receiving a scholarship may affect your financial aid; please contact your financial aid manager with any questions.)
The UC ANR GFI Communication / Outreach Fellowship focuses on community awareness and education, in particular:
- Educate underserved communities in California through written, visual and digital communications on nutrition, food safety, prevention of food waste, prevention of childhood obesity and other diet-related issues.
- Enlighten the public on the impact of UC ANR on the above topics through multimedia communications.
The UC ANR GFI Fellow will write one-page articles, blog posts, social media articles, press articles and other communication tools on nutrition and diet issues. The fellow will also assist in the development of communication plans and outreach implementation plans. In collaboration with the UC ANR Strategic Communications team, the fellow will create a project plan with milestones and timeline and attend monthly meetings with strategic communications.
Excellent communication skills and an enthusiasm for helping others are required. An ability to speak and write in Spanish is preferred but not required.
The fellow is expected to work on the project for an average of five to 10 hours per week throughout the 2021-2022 academic year and is also expected to participate in all UC system activities for the GFI scholarship program. System-wide activities include a fall orientation, virtual leadership training, bi-monthly conference calls (starting in November), a spring field trip or conference, as well as a symposium of closing and a poster presentation to be held in conjunction with the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC) in July 2022.
