Shorthanded Pittsburgh Penguins lose defenseman Kris Letang due to COVID-19 protocol

The Pittsburgh penguins will be without Kris letang versus Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night after the defender was placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol.

Coach Mike Sullivan announced Letang’s status after morning practice.

Letang are the last Penguins player to be sidelined at the start of the season, a group led by stars Sidney crosby (wrist) and Evgeni malkin (knee) who are recovering from out-of-season surgeries.

The Penguins got off to a good start without Crosby and Malkin, posting a 2-0-2 record heading into Toronto on Saturday night.

Crosby and Malkin are far from the only Penguins players to have been affected. Cheeky Bryan Rust is “week to week” with a lower body injury. Veterans Center Jeff Carter, who replaced Crosby as the frontline center, will also miss the Maple Leafs’ Saturday night visit after testing positive for COVID-19.

Sullivan said Friday that Carter is asymptomatic but will not be available against Toronto. The team received good news on Friday when it turned out that the best goalkeeper Tristan Jarry underwent a “false positive” COVID test Thursday, freeing his return to training.
