MOSCOW, Oct. 25 (Reuters) – Russia on Monday reported 37,930 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, its highest number of cases in a day since the start of the pandemic.

The government’s coronavirus task force reported 1,069 virus-related deaths, six below the record of 1,075 set on Saturday. Faced with worsening infection rates and frustrated by the slow adoption of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine by its own population, authorities are introducing tougher measures this week in an attempt to curb the spread of the pandemic.

President Vladimir Putin said last week that October 30 to November 7 will be paid on non-working days. Starting this Thursday, Moscow will introduce its toughest lockdown measures since June 2020, with only essential stores like supermarkets and pharmacies remaining open.
