Over the past couple of years we have seen a lot of rumors related to a “Pro” model of the popular Nintendo Switch hybrid console. Rumors have escalated enough this year that we are confident we will see its launch before the end of 2021.
Well, it turns out we were both right and wrong with our expectations. Today we learned that Nintendo has a new Switch model to launch this year, officially called the Nintendo Switch OLED model. However, this is not the “Pro” model that many of us were hoping for.
That being said, there’s still a lot to like about this upgraded version of the Switch.
Nintendo Switch OLED model upgrades
The most obvious upgrade for this Switch model is the inclusion of an OLED panel. The original switch has an LCD screen, which produces objectively inferior images. This OLED panel is also physically larger than the original Switch at 7 inches (the original screen is 6.2 inches).
There are, however, a few other notable improvements. Internal storage capacity is now 64 GB, which is twice as much as in the original Switch. It also has a much improved kickstand that covers the entire rear of the console and adjustable breakpoints, which will solve a huge problem for gamers on the go. Nintendo also claims that the sound of the unconnected console is superior, but that doesn’t really explain what makes this possible.
Finally, the included docking station also includes a built-in Ethernet port. Previously you had to buy an accessory for this feature, so it’s a nice touch.
When can you buy and how much
The Nintendo Switch OLED model will launch on October 8, 2021. It will have a suggested retail price of $ 349. It’s just $ 50 more than the regular Switch and $ 150 more than the Switch Lite.
All current official Nintendo Switch games and accessories (including Joy-Con) are compatible with the OLED Nintendo Switch model.
Be warned, however: it will most likely be incredibly difficult to get this when it launches. The lesson global chip shortage along with the incredible popularity of the Switch console will make it the go-to holiday gift.
