New Animal Sciences Department Head Joins Purdue Agriculture Leadership Team

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Karen Plaut, Dean Glenn W. Sample of Purdue Agriculture, has announced that John Blanton has accepted the position of Head of the Department of Animal Sciences. He takes up his duties as of Monday, February 1.

“Dr. Blanton brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in leadership to the department,” Plaut said. “He comes to us from Mississippi State University, where he has been a professor and head of department since 2013. He comes to us from Mississippi State University. has built strong relationships with industry and stakeholders throughout his career and is an energetic, results-oriented leader who knows how to get things done.

Blanton, who holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from New Mexico State University, received his doctorate from Purdue University. He praised the education and connections he made to Purdue and shared his personal connection to the university.

“I received a spectacular education at Purdue, working with amazing academics and graduate students,” he said. “Purdue is also where I met my wife. For all of these reasons, Purdue has always been a special place for me.

Blanton said his original intention was to complete his doctorate. and work in the industry for the rest of his career. Instead, he held positions at several universities, private and non-profit research institutes, and owned a business. He said his experience prepared him to become a department head, first at Mississippi State University and now at his alma mater.

“These experiences have allowed me to understand the time constraints and economic pressures facing our colleagues in the private sector,” he said. “I can also understand the need for independent science that focuses on discovery. I think my experience in the industry has been very helpful in the classroom as well.

“I remind my students that as a zootechnician, I am an applied biologist. I want the work I do to improve the lives of stakeholders. “
