Lionel Messi has ended his wait for a first major international title as Argentina beat Brazil in the Copa America final at Rio’s Maracana Stadium.
Messi, 34, finally took top honors with his country in their 10th major – while Argentina won their first Copa America in 28 years.
Angel Di Maria proved the winner of the match, with his superb lob the only goal of the match.
Messi had a chance to secure the win but slipped with the goal at his mercy.
Everton forward Richarlison had Brazil’s best chance, seeing an effort ruled out for offside and then pricking the fingers of goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who also saved from Gabriel Barbosa, but the defending champions failed in a disappointing performance.
This means Messi’s number 10 and former Barcelona team-mate Neymar continue their personal quest for international success, having missed out on Brazil’s 2019 Copa victory with injury.
The match was watched by a small crowd of 7,000 guests, due to Covid-19 restrictions, but was the first in the tournament to have spectators.
The sparse home fans made their voices heard, however, especially whenever Messi touched the ball, booing and taunting the striker.
The tournament, delayed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic and moved from the original co-hosts of Colombia and Argentina, was moved to 2019 host Brazil in a last-minute decision which received criticism in light of an increase in coronavirus cases in the country.
