How to travel safely during your pandemic summer (2021)

The overseas states, territories and possessions of the United States have more stringent entry rules. In Hawaii, even if you are vaccinated, you will need to take a Covid-19 test and receive a negative result before boarding your flight (if you received your vaccine outside of Hawaii originally). Otherwise, be prepared for a mandatory 10-day quarantine upon arrival, although the testing requirement will be discontinued for vaccinated travelers on July 8. Travelers who have recently recovered from a Covid-19 infection may also be exempt, in certain circumstances.

Porto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands also have their own entry criteria and requirements. Take a look at the CDC Guidelines for Domestic Travel before planning your trip.

Am I safe on the plane?

Ah, the old flying bus. You can reduce your risk of infection by making sure that more than two weeks have passed since your last vaccination and by wearing a face mask at the airport and on the plane whenever possible (for example, not eating ). It is currently US federal law to wear a mask at any time at airports and on board an airliner. We have mask recommendations here.

Some commercial aircraft have powerful air filtration systems that clean and exchange all the air in the cabin two or three times per minute. This is much more often than in a typical commercial building or your home. All major U.S. airlines are now reserving intermediate seats – they had buckled them during the height of the pandemic to create space between passengers, but not anymore. For more information on what to expect on a flight, visit your airline’s Covid-19 portal:

If you’re driving instead, read the WIRED Medea Giordano review guide to safe driving during a pandemic. Amtrak is another option if it takes too long to drive and you want to avoid flying. It has been modernizing its trains since Precautions against covid19. You can book a private room if you want to be completely separate from other passengers.

Can I travel if I am not vaccinated?

If you are not vaccinated, it will not be as easy for you to travel, and you will be on a higher risk of catching Covid-19. Wearing a mask may reduce some risks, but there is a lack of good data on how much and it will not reduce it as much as vaccination.

Seriously, vaccines are safe, they or they don’t magnetize your blood, and they do not contain human fetal cells. The WIRED office is full of people, including me, who have taken the hit. Among us, we had the three brands of vaccines. We won’t tell you to do something that we haven’t already done ourselves. There is a tiny chance of serious side effects, and WIRED Senior Correspondent Adam Rogers talk frankly about them here.

Will I have to quarantine?

If you are not vaccinated, almost certainly. And that’s if they’ll let you in. With a negative Covid-19 test, you could be released after a few days. But maybe not. It is common for countries to require 10 or 14 days in a particular hotel, without you being able to leave on your own. Check the country rules you plan to visit. Certain island states, territories, and US possessions will also quarantine you under certain circumstances. And remember, you’re probably going to have to pay out of pocket for it. Invoices often go quadruple in US dollars.

So, uh, the vaccine passports? Tell me about these.

Right now, the paper vaccination card you received when you received your vaccine (s) is your most important document. For now, at least, this is the default document you should keep with you when traveling to show customs that you have been vaccinated.

You can get a yellow card from the World Health Organization, an official proof of vaccination document recognized in most places internationally. It is not mandatory to have a WHO yellow card to travel, despite false rumors circulating, but if you want one you can buy it from the US government bookstore for $ 25. Bring your blank yellow card to your vaccinator and ask them to add your vaccination information.
