the San Diego Padres welcome again a familiar face in an unusual place.

Fernando Tatis Jr.. is back in the lineup, but instead of playing his usual shortstop position, he will make his first career start in right field for Sunday’s series final against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tatis has been on the injured list since July 30 with inflammation of his left shoulder after partially dislocating his shoulder while sliding into third base. He’s left three games this season because he partially dislocated his shoulder, with the possibility of surgery in the offseason.

While recovering from this latest injury, Tatis started playing fly balls in center field, which raised questions about where he could play on the pitch when he returned. Instead, he’ll play in the right field with the Gold Glove winner Trent Grisham stay in the center and Tommy pham in left field as the Padres look to bounce back a day after being without blow by Arizona Tyler gilbert on his first major league start. Jake cronenworth will continue to play shortstop instead of Tatis.

San Diego will gladly welcome Tatis to any position because, despite being absent for injury, he still leads the National League in homers (31) and stolen goals (23).

The news was not all positive for the Padres on Sunday as the team placed the right-hander Yu darvish on the 10-day injured list with lumbar oppression retroactive to Friday.

Darvish (7-7, 3.70) left his start Thursday in the third set with a sore back. He joins the other launchers Drew pomeranz, Dinelson Lamet and Chris Paddack on the Padres’ wounded list.

San Diego comes into play Sunday third in the NL West 10 games behind the Giants of San Francisco, but holds a 2½-game lead for second wildcard spot.
