Don’t mention ‘Brexit’, officials are told

Whitehall Style Guide advises officials to avoid using the word ‘Brexit’ and instead refer to ‘December 31, 2020’ – Niall Carson

A Whitehall style guide advises officials to avoid using the word “Brexit “ and refer instead to “December 31, 2020”.

The guide says government officials should only use the word when “providing historical context”. Rather, they are advised to refer to the date on which the United Kingdom has left the European Union.

Officials are also urged not to use the term “transition period” but instead use the dates on which Britain negotiated to leave the bloc.

The UK Government’s Linguistic Style Guide, published on the government’s official website, says: “You can use the term Brexit to provide historical context, but it’s best to use specific dates when possible. For example, use December 31, 2020 rather than Brexit or when the UK has left the EU.

Other expressions in the guidelines include “before December 31, 2020” instead of “during the transition period” and “after January 1, 2021” instead of “after the transition period”.

Welsh government under fire over Brexit ban

The news comes after Wales ‘Labor government was criticized earlier this week for’ banning ‘the term Brexit and telling officials:’ Brexit has taken place. Use the transition period to refer to the period between February 1 and December 31, 2020 ”.

The decentralized government guidelines, which were first published in 2019 and revised in December, also insist that officials use “UK government” rather than “HM government”.

Speaking to The Times, Andrew RT Davies, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives in Senedd, said: ‘Just last week ministers canceled women’s sex education in Wales, and now they are putting Brexit and Sa Majesty in the trash of political correctness.

“This is a misuse of public money and a total and utter waste of time. Public servants who are just looking to continue their daily work should not be subjected to such nonsense.”

An official said: “It’s a huge AZ, but the only one missing is W for awake.
