The last season of Dickinson is almost here, which means this – aka, the video above – is the trailer for said final season. Who too means this is one of the last looks we have on the critically and fan-acclaimed Apple TV + series starring Hailee Steinfeld as titular poet, Emily Dickinson.
In the two-minute plus trailer, Amherst – and all of America – isn’t just on the brink of war; It’s in there, as the civil war that was brewing in the background of Season 2 has finally begun. And as a result, Emily is once again grappling with what her poetry means in the face of massive global events that are unfolding.
But that’s not all she’s dealing with… At the start of the clip, Emily and the love of her life, Sue (Ella Hunt) are once again standing by a tree having a serious conversation. .
“Emily, you’re a poet,” Sue explains complacently. “You work so hard on your poems. You work so hard to make them perfect. But I want the mess. I want you.”
While most of the first part of the trailer feels more like serious drama, this classic Dickinson the strangeness begins to seep in as we go along. Abby (Sophie Zucker), as usual, upsets the cart, remarking that “this war just came out of nowhere.” To which Emily replies, “I’m not sure, I think it was pretty clear that we were going in the wrong direction.”
From there, we go back to the surprising mix of tones and settings that made the show so beloved by fans, from a first look at Billy Eichner’s awe-inspiring (naturally) Walt Whitman, to a staircase straight out of it. an 80s music video, at epic and romantic moments like Sue saying, “I can’t live without you” and Emily replying, “I can’t breathe without you.
But the best is saved for last, as Emily and Lavinia (Anna Baryshnikov) receive volumes of collected poems from Emily, thanks to Sylvia Plath by Chloe Fineman. “In the future, you are actually famous,” says Lavinia, to which Plath replies, “Emily Dickinson was the original sad girl.”
So, will the final season prove that Emily was the original sad girl? Or will there be a happy ending? We’ll just have to log in on November 5th to find out.
