Netflix still relies on comedian Dave Chappelle to bring fans in and has brought in the polarizing star to open its inaugural star-studded comedy festival.
Chappelle, whose controversial ‘The Closer’ special sparked a firestorm for the streaming giant, will kick off the 11-day comedy festival next spring after the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the event’s debut in 2020.
Netflix is a joke: the festival, based on the streamer’s cross-platform comedy brand, will be rolled out across 25 major Los Angeles-area sites between April 28 and May 8 and will feature more than 130 artists, Netflix announced on Monday.
Chappelle’s opening concert is presented as “Dave Chappelle and Friends” and will take place at the Hollywood Bowl on April 28. On Monday, it is considered Chappelle’s first Los Angeles comedy show because it has been widely criticized (but also supported) for his transphobic and callous remarks. he did in “The Closer,” which debuted in October.

As part of the Netflix Is a Joke Festival, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is set to make history on May 7 as the first stand-up comedian to perform at Dodger Stadium, while the Inglewood Forum will host performances from the comedian John Mulaney and Bill Burr in May. May 3 and 5, respectively. The new Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) will be the stage for comedian Kevin Hart’s event on May 6.

Dynamic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host a conversation at the YouTube Theater on May 7, and Seth Rogen will host a four-night live table at the Orpheum Theater.
The Greek Theater has several events on the program, including “Larry David in Conversation” on May 2, a Bert Kreischer concert on May 5 and “Stand Out: An LGBTQ + Celebration”. “Stand Out” will be recorded as a special for the streamer on May 7 and will feature Bob the Drag Queen, Eddie Izzard, Margaret Cho, Patti Harrison, River Butcher, Sandra Bernhard, Solomon Georgio, Tig Notaro, Trixie Mattel and Wanda Sykes.

Presales for the festival, produced by Netflix in association with Live Nation, begin Tuesday and tickets go on sale Friday.
When the festival was announced in March 2020, the line-up included “Nanette” star Hannah Gadsby, who has since publicly argued with the streamer over Chappelle, as well as the cast of “Schitt’s Creek”, who participated in a farewell tour for the Emmy-winning Comedy. None of them were included in Monday’s lineup announcement.
