A descoberta da variante B.1.617 não é exatamente uma novidade: os primeiros relatos dessa nova versão do coronavírus foram publicados ainda em outubro de 2020.

Mais recentemente, porém, o interesse e a preocupação relacionados a essa linhagem aumentaram consideravelmente.

Isso porque o número de casos de covid-19 provocados por ela aumentou consideravelmente na Índia, seu provável local de origem.

Nas últimas semanas, a cepa também foi detectada em outros mais de 40 países de todos os continentes, incluindo o Brasil.
