client – Trying to help grandpa get his bitcoins back

[ad_1]

In 2013, my grandfather bought BTC. The Wallet.dat file was most likely lost due to formatting of the PC. He would like to get his wallet or his bitcoins back or whatever is possible. I don’t understand much about that.

I don’t know the details, but here’s all I know:

  • The supposed date of the transaction
  • The wallet was probably created using Bitcoin-qt
  • I have a snapshot of the transaction made in 2013 where his public address appears
  • I have access to the same laptop that is supposed to be used to create the wallet
  • Laptop has probably been formatted at some point
  • I found a file that I don’t know what it is that weighs around 6MB, and consists only of alphanumeric strings and a header for Msftedit 5.41.21.2510 (copy paste?)
  • Searching for a laptop does not return any wallet.dat file but lots of bitcoin related files

Using a file recovery tool is a last resort due to formatting the laptop (is that word correct?) And I just don’t want to go just yet.

It is very careful (except for not saving wallet.dat lol) and this strange file is stored in a folder named BITCOIN along with a file containing the voucher for its transaction, so even if it is not the wallet it is should be linked to bitcoin.

1 Does anyone know what could be done? 2 Does anyone know what this strange file is?

I created a wallet with Bitcoin Core to see what the creation process is and there was a message that if the wallet was created from a backup file the passphrase would be the same for this backed up wallet . This hints that there is a way to restore the backup files, but I haven’t come across it.

3 Would this recovery process be helpful? Which file do I need?

I would very much appreciate your help guys, thanks in advance Alvaro
