Cereal dust explosions in 2020 do not kill anybody

LAFAYETTE WEST, IN – Royal ambrose, associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering at Purdue University, recently released the Grain Dust Explosion Annual Report 2020 which lists the number of deaths and injuries nationwide.

Grain dust is a highly combustible and often airborne substance in handling and processing facilities. Explosions occur when there is an ignition source, often small unintentional sparks inside the installation.

According to the report, there were eight grain dust explosions in 2020, killing zero and injuring nine. The ten-year average for injuries is 8.1; it is 1.7 for deaths. The types of grain identified in the blasts included two cases of corn, two of wheat, two mixed feeds, one rice and one dietary fiber. Dust explosions occurred in eight different states, one each in Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri and Arkansas. Four of these explosions occurred in a grain elevator and the other four in a flour mill, a corn mill, a rice mill and a grain processor for dietary fiber.

Ambrose explained the importance of compiling these reports annually.

“Most companies use this information to train their employees,” Ambrose said. “Regulatory authorities also use incident reports for training purposes. It helps to create or publicize dust explosions and their causes. “
