Bay Area mom accused of organizing teenage drinking bouts

A woman from the Bay Area was charged with child abuse and other crimes after allegedly hosting wild parties where she provided her 15-year-old son and other teenagers with copious amounts of alcohol and encouraged boys to sexually assault girls.

Shannon Marie O’Connor, 47, gave her son and other children so much alcohol, mostly between the ages of 13 and 15, that they often vomited and passed out, Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office investigator says.

O’Connor reserved rooms for teens to engage in sexual activity and pressured girls to enter rooms where boys were waiting for them, investigator Christina Hanks wrote in a document. judicial.

At a party at her home in Los Gatos in December 2020, O’Connor handed a drunk boy a condom and shoved him into a room with a girl, Hanks wrote.

The girl ran away and locked herself in a bathroom.

Another time, the same girl was lying in a bedroom because she was feeling extremely intoxicated, Hanks wrote.

O’Connor brought a boy to the bedroom and left, according to Hanks.

The girl then told investigators she was too drunk to resist and the boy digitally penetrated her while she cried and covered her face with a pillow.

“It took a lot of brave kids to come forward and unravel this deeply troubling matter,” said Dist. Atty. Jeff Rosen said in a statement. “As a parent, I am shocked.”

O’Connor, also known as Shannon Bruga, now lives in Idaho and is extradited to Santa Clara County.

She was charged on October 7 with 39 counts, including child abuse, sexual assault and supplying alcohol to minors.

O’Connor also faces criminal fraud charges for allegedly making over $ 120,000 in unauthorized charges on a corporate card given to him as an administrative assistant for Aruba Networks, the office said. district attorney.

When police came to O’Connor’s Idaho home to arrest her, they found her with 10 boys and two girls, most of whom had spent the night.

Investigators suspect she has had other parties with teenagers in Idaho in recent months, Ada County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Her two teenage sons were placed in the care of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Starting in the summer of 2020, O’Connor’s sprawling two-story home on Arroyo del Rancho, set among rolling hills in a wealthy Silicon Valley community, has become the scene of raging parties for his son and daughter. other teenagers, prosecutors said.

O’Connor tried to prevent her husband from discovering the parties, in one case chasing the teenagers as he approached the house, according to Hanks’ statement.

O’Connor told the teens they could go to jail if they told anyone about the holidays and threatened to spread rumors about a 14-year-old girl she suspected of breaking the rule, wrote Hanks.

At a party in the summer of 2020, O’Connor refused to call 911 when a 14-year-old boy passed out and repeatedly vomited, leaving a 13 or 14-year-old girl in charge of his care, according to Hanks.

For his son’s 15th birthday, O’Connor rented a cabin in Santa Cruz, asking teens on Snapchat what kind of alcohol they wanted for the party, Hanks said in his statement.

The owner’s external video cameras captured approximately 12 boys and girls, with several boys urinating, falling and vomiting. The damage to the house totaled $ 9,000.

Investigators obtained video of O’Connor standing over a girl as she drank a bottle of alcohol. The video also showed her sitting with teenagers as they were extremely intoxicated.

In preparation for a Halloween party at her house, O’Connor had teenagers hide some booze in the bushes – about eight cases of beer, a bottle of vodka and a bottle of Fireball, Hanks wrote.

O’Connor invited many teens over, saying she would tell their parents it was a basketball and ping-pong party.

On December 19, O’Connor “encouraged” a teenager too young to drive to drive his SUV around the Los Gatos high school parking lot with two other teenagers, both intoxicated, clinging to the back of the vehicle. , wrote Hanks.

One of the boys fell and hit his head, losing consciousness. He was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion.
