5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week

Welcome to the 387th edition of Weekly Android Apps. Here are the headlines from the past week:

  • Google search did a big oopsy this week. Zurch-based engineer Hristo Georgiev has been wrongly identified by Google as a serial killer and rapist. The man shares his name with said rapist and Google mistakenly put the photo of the innocent man next to the serial killer’s bio. Sometimes it’s a good idea to check the facts more than once, even with Google’s own search results.
  • Google terminates APK file format in the Play Store. The new format, App Bundles, is the replacement. App Bundles would be smaller, easier to update, and overall better for the end user. However, developers should still use APKs for other services, like Amazon or Samsung’s Galaxy Store, as those places don’t support App Bundles.
  • Google also makes transport easier your COVID-19 vaccine and test records on your phone. The company updated Android’s pass system to include vaccine passes. Google also guarantees people that their passes will not be uploaded to Google’s servers and used for malicious purposes. Some say you can just take a picture of your immunization card, but it’s easily tampered with. This system is apparently not. Read the link for more details.
  • There is a new health app in the works of Google. He wants to help people take charge of their medical records and their health. The app was leaked earlier this week. He seems to want to store your medical records in a way that is easy to find and share with your doctor. There aren’t many details yet, so click the link to see more for now.
  • Windows 11’s ability to run Android apps is a big deal. However, there are a few questions. For example, we discovered this week that it is possible to load android apps if you want. Of course, the Bluestacks CEO says things might not work out the way people expect it to start. Still, a poll we conducted showed most of our readers intend to try it anyway. Finally, there are still questions about why Microsoft didn’t choose Google Play. You can read Jon Fingas’ thoughts on it here.

Star Claw

Price: Free to play

Claw Stars is a mix between a gacha, a collector’s game and a claw machine game. Players rescue creatures trapped in orbs. You grab the orbs, free the creatures, and go back. The heart of mechanics is the claw machine. You collect orbs from one location during the levels and collect your various furry friends. However, there are other things you can do like collect coins, steal animals from other players, etc. It’s a cute game without a ton of depth, but it’s an interesting little time killer.

AR Canvas by Samsung

Price: Release

Samsung’s AR Canvas lets you draw things on photos with augmented reality. The things you draw in specific places stay there for others to see later. This is useful or fun in many cases, such as treasure hunts or housewarming parties. However, we don’t see too much real-world use for something like this. Still, it can be fun for kids, small gatherings and things like that if everyone is shaking a Samsung phone.

Mitrasphere

Price: Free to play

Mitrasphere is the latest game from Crunchyroll. It is a gacha RPG and its principle is similar to most gacha RPGs. There is a story to follow, characters to summon, and a PvP mode if you want to play against other players. The game freshens things up with private chat rooms, voice emotes, and five classes to play with. Like most gacha, the combat can get repetitive after a while and it takes a lot of work to get through the game. However, it’s a pretty decent and forgiving gacha, so it may be worth it if you like this kind of. things.

Open sky

Price: Release

OpenSky is an application of Wing Aviation, a subsidiary of Alphabet. It is a drone app which helps you to obey the law while flying your drone. It lets you know if the area around you is legal to fly and if not, it helps you get clearance to fly. The app definitely needs some tweaking, but it could be one of the more useful apps for drone owners. The app can also show you your flight history if you want. Most of the complaints revolve around app bugs, so hopefully the polish will happen sooner rather than later.

Land of thugs

Price: Free to play

Rogue Land is a hack-and-slash adventure game. It plays like a lot of these games. Players explore the world to uncover all the different secrets. There is also a story mode and a side quest mode for you to collect and complete the entire game. The mechanics are quite simple, but effective. It shouldn’t take long for players to learn how everything works. Microtransactions are used for a lot of things in the game, but the game allows players to earn a small but steady stream of gems to unlock things over time. The other big complaint from players is the inability to shoot and move at the same time. Those who have played Archero will see immediate similarities to this game, for better or for worse.
